Determination of urine tumor necrosis factor, IL-6, IL-8, and serum IL-6 in patients with hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome BJID
Fan,Wanhu; Liu,Xiaojing; Yue,Jinsheng.
OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to explore the role of cytokines in the pathogenesis of hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome (HFRS). METHODS: Double-antibody sandwich ELISA was used to determine serum interleukin (IL)-6, urine tumor necrosis factor (TNF), IL-6, and IL-8 levels in 56 patients with HFRS. RESULTS: Serum IL-6, urine TNF, IL-6, and IL-8 concentrations in HFRS patients were significantly higher than those in the control group (p < 0.001). the concentrations increased at fever stage, then continued to increase during the hypotension stage and peaked at the oliguria stage. the concentrations of serum IL-6, urine TNF, IL-6, and IL-8 increased according to the severity of the disease, and differed greatly among different types of the...

Epidemiological aspects of acquired immunodeficiency syndrome in older Brazilians: a comparative approach BJID
Carvalho,Luiz Max Fagundes de; Câmara,Fernando Portela.
OBJECTIVES: To compare epidemiological aspects of young (15 to 49 years old) and older (more than 50 years old) AIDS patients. METHODS: We analyzed 511,633 AIDS cases notified to the Brazilian Ministry of Health in the period of 1980-2008 looking at sex, age ranges, educational level and exposure category. Patients were divided into three age groups: under 15, from 15 to 49 and over 50 years old. Using a comparative approach, we analyzed data with regard to category of exposure, education (expressed in years of schooling), and sex ratio among younger (15-49) and older adults (over 50 years old). Time series data were log-transformed and normalized, and the temporal trend was evaluated. RESULTS: AIDS incidence is increasing among people over 50 years old in...

Epidural application of Methylprednisolone as an alternative pain control therapy for cauda equina syndrome in dogs with lumbosacral instability: case report MV&Z
de Moura Macedo, Thais; Henrique Bessi, Wellington.
This is a report on cauda equina syndrome in dogs with an emphasis on clinical noninvasive treatment for pain control. Cauda equina is a bundle of nerve roots on the vertebral canal beginning at the end of the spinal cord, mainly affecting large dogs. Conservative treatment is an option over surgical treatment. This report thus shows the effects of the use of epidural applications of methylprednisolone in three applications with interval of 21 days.

Prevalences of Simian, Sydney and Suwon Creases and their Association with Each Other, Body Sides, Handedness, Sex and Anomalies/Diseases/Syndromes in a Population of Central India International Journal of Morphology
Sharma,D. K; Sharma,Vandana.
The Simian and Sydney creases are variant palmar creases which have now drawn medical attention as their presence correlates strongly with numerous chromosomal anomalies and diseases. Works on these creases have been done on several human communities, racial and ethnic but no specific study is focussed out on the Indian populations. In this study 1000 Central Indian subjects (500 males and 500 females) aged between 5 to 70 years were randomly selected and examined by the authors. We found the prevalence of Simian, Sydney and Suwon creases in studied population of Central India is 14.4%, 3.6% and 2.4% respectively, which is a little higher than the figures for Asians and Caucasians claimed by earlier studies. There is no any association between these...

Relationship of the Celiac Trunk with Median Arcuate Ligament of the Diaphragm International Journal of Morphology
Petrella,Selma; Rodriguez,Celio Fernando de Sousa; Sgrott,Emerson Alexandre; Fernandes,Geraldo José Medeiros; Marques,Sergio Ricardo; Prates,José Carlos.
In the present study different positions of the median arcuate ligament in relation to the celiac trunk as well as measurements of overlap and distance, also the approach between the two structures were investigated. In addition histological studies of the diaphragm crura and the median arcuate ligament were performed. Sixty-three cadavers fixed in formalin 10% aqueous solution and 20 non-fixed adult cadavers of both sexes were studied. Dissections of the celiac trunk were performed after dissection of the peritoneal cavity in the laboratories of the Anatomy Division of the UNIFESP-EPM, UNILUS and UNISA, and during necropsies in the City Morgue of the UNIFESP-EPM and USP. Regarding morphological analysis under light microscopy, three non-fixed cadavers...

Ernesto,Aline Santarem; Lemos,Renata Muller Banzato Pinto de; Huehara,Maria Ivone; Morcillo,André Moreno; Vilela,Maria Marluce dos Santos; Silva,Marcos Tadeu Nolasco da.
INTRODUCTION: Adherence, which is crucial to the success of antiretroviral therapy (HAART), is currently a major challenge in the care of children and adolescents living with HIV/AIDS. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the prevalence of nonadherence to HAART using complementary instruments in a cohort of children and adolescents with HIV/AIDS followed in a reference service in Campinas, Brazil. METHODS: The level of adherence of 108 patients and caregivers was evaluated by an adapted standardized questionnaire and pharmacy dispensing records (PDR). Non-adherence was defined as a drug intake lower than 95% (on 24-hour or seven-day questionnaires), or as an interval of 38 days or more for pharmacy refills. The association between adherence and clinical, immunological,...
